Motion-capture is a pretty big business these days, what with all these science fiction franchises featuring tons of computer animated creatures and characters. Mo-cap has been around for a while, but these days, with movies like Avatar and Warcraft and even the new Planet of the Apes series featuring whole worlds built around CGI characters, it seems everyone’s got a hand in the mo-cap pie. We knew that Avengers: Infinity War would feature at least one completely CGI character — Thanos — but with a new cast addition it looks like there will be at least one more.

Terry Notary, who starred as Rocket in both Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as well as playing the titular simian in Kong: Skull Island, will star in Infinity War as one of Thanos’ henchmen. He revealed his casting in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

I’m working on four characters right now. I’m working with Josh Brolin and three other actors [in Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War], and I’m playing Josh Brolin’s right hand bad guy in the film. I can’t say the name of the character or I think Marvel will sever my head, but I apply those same principals of what it means to drop bullshit and just play a character truly evil. And it’s working. [Laughs] It’s truly working.

Knowing his mo-cap chops, it’s probably safe to assume his character will be mostly CGI (despite Notary having, like, THE most chiseled jawline in the business). IMDb lists his Infinity War character as “Cul Obsidian,” which probably refers to the Cull Obsidian, otherwise known as the Black Order, a team of nefarious characters whom Thanos enlists to help him destroy planets and find the Infinity Gems. Members of the team include Black Swan, Proxima Midnight, Black Dwarf, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, and Supergiant. Notary’s description of his character as the “right hand bad guy” sounds a lot like Corvus, who is Thanos’ favorite and the leader of his armies. This might mean that we’ll see the rest of the Black Order either in Infinity War, or sometime in the future.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 4, 2018.
