Beyonce and Jay-Z continued their quest for justice for slain teenager Trayvon Martin. This time, the couple attended a New York City rally in support of the fallen Floridian, whose killer, George Zimmerman, was recently acquitted of both murder and manslaughter.
The Reverend Al Sharpton praised the pair for their dedication to Martin’s memory and justice. The controversial MSNBC host called Hov and Bey “two of the baddest artists of all time” and revealed that they didn’t want their presence to overshadow the true objectives of the rally: to preserve Martin’s memory, help right a perceived injustice and help his family grieve.
“Jay Z and Beyonce said they didn’t want to speak and they didn’t come for a photo op,” Sharpton preached to the crowd. “Beyonce put a beautiful message up on Instagram. Let me tell you, that before a lot of you were down, Jay-Z always supported us.” (You can see Queen Bey’s tribute above!)
As for why they came? Their motives seem pretty pure to us. “Jay-Z told me, ‘I’m a father. Beyonce is a mother,'” Sharpton said. “We all feel the pain and apprehension — the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn’t protect anybody. We do not come from hate, we come from love of children.”
