As you’re looking online this month, trying to figure out what movie you should go see at the theater, don’t be surprised if you can’t find much you really want to go see. A new study reveals that February movies are actually the worst of the entire year.

Slate looked back at 13 years of data on Rotten Tomatoes and calculated the average Tomatometer score for each month. This was the result:

While January has the reputation of being the “dump month” (when movie studios unceremoniously dump their worst movies), it turns out that February is actually the worst of the year, averaging a 45% on Rotten Tomatoes since 2000 (January, by contrast, was slightly higher at 48%, tied with September). Last February, was a particularly rotten month with a score of 41%, loaded up with stinkers like ‘Stand Up Guys’ and ‘A Good Day to Die Hard.’

Perhaps just as interesting as February sucking, is that July, when most big blockbusters hit theaters, actually proved to be the best for movies at 58%, just barely beating out November and December (when the majority of the potential Oscar movies open), which were tied at 57%.

Will this February help buck the trend? There is the fantastic ‘LEGO Movie‘ opening this weekend, which currently has a 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating, but there’s also ‘Vampire Academy‘ (which is so bad it doesn’t even have a rating at this point) and ‘Monuments Men‘ (35%).

So, while this February might not have a lot of cinematic treasures for you to enjoy at the movie theater, take solace in knowing that this is also the shortest month of the year and before you know it, March will have arrived.
