We’ve spent our fair share of bleary-eyed nights in front of computers and gaming consoles. But it never once occurred to us that we might, you know, have a problem. And yet, according to the American Psychiatric Association, this could be a sign of a serious addiction.

In fact, the APA has proposed that “Internet Use Disorder” be officially listed among other recognized mental disorders and studied further.

In South Korea, where internet and gaming addiction is viewed as a serious issue, some doctors treat patients with counseling and other forms of therapy also used on alcoholics.

According to Dr. Han Doug-hyun of the Chung-Ang University Hospital in Seoul, there are five warning signs of gaming or internet addiction. They are:

  • Disrupted sleep patterns
  • Loss of job or unwillingness to attend school
  • An increasing need for a bigger fix
  • Withdrawal, including irritability or anxiety
  • Cravings

Uh oh. That’s not good news for us.

Another warning sign might be collapsing after four straight days of Xbox but we aren’t doctors, no matter what we tell random women.
