If you’re like me, you’ve probably gotten a little confused about the various Godzilla adaptations popping up in Hollywood, so let’s take a moment to clear that up. First there’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film. You also have Godzilla: Monster Planet, the animated series heading to Netflix later this year. You have the in-development sequel to Japanese franchise reboot Shin Godzilla, which technically cannot begin production until 2020. And you have Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which will bring the two major monster franchises together.

Got it? Good. Now you know exactly who and what is being teased in today’s bit of Godzilla news. Over at his Twitter account (via Heroic Hollywood), Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty shared a quick tease of his Godzilla currently being rendered:

Since Kong: Skull Island emerged as big hit at the international box office, we’ve known Legendary was going to go all-out on their crossover Godzilla and Kong franchises. It’ll still be interesting to see what (if any) lessons Dougherty and company take from the recent Godzilla reboot, which was a middling success both commercially and critically (despite some very, very strong visuals throughout). With talent like Dougherty and Wingard behind the camera, we can at least now say that the horror geeks are running the asylums. Into your hands I commend my kaiju, gentlemen.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for Godzilla: King of the Monsters:

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species — thought to be mere myths — rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

The film will roar into theaters on March 22, 2019.
