Calling all little monsters. Gossip singer Beth Ditto says Lady Gaga makes music for 5-year-olds. But before you launch an all out war on Ditto and her band for “attacking” the Mother Monster and the monster contingent, like you did when Madonna took to harshly criticizing your heroine, realize something. Ditto was actually paying Gaga a huge compliment, despite its seeming backhandedness.

In context, Ditto’s comments to BANG Showbiz (courtesy of Arizona Republic) celebrate Gaga’s music as being that which gets young kids into music in the first place. She’s like this generation’s Michael Jackson or Cyndi Lauper and a gateway of sorts.

Ditto said, “I think her music is for 5-year-olds. Like when I was 5, for me it was Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson. Those people were iconic. I’m 31 so that was like 26 years ago. I think that for the 5-year-old watching MTV right now, Lady Gaga is going to be an iconic person.”

She continued, addressing the Mother Monster’s sphere of influence, saying, “In 20 years, the people who are here and talking to journalists will be like, ‘Oh Lady Gaga changed my life, Nicki Minaj changed my life.’ They’ll be saying who influenced them and it will be Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, artists like that. I don’t think it’s as relevant when a 31-year-old is saying the same things.”

See? Ditto is throwing props to Gaga as someone who will lay the foundation and foster passion in future music lovers. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Ditto also addressed the age gap artists deal with when trying to connect across multiple age groups. She explained why Gaga is important, saying, ”I think that what [Lady Gaga] does is interesting and you know it’s contributing in a really big way. But if you’re watching Lady Gaga as a kid it’s so much different than when you’re 31. It’s like yeah we like her songs but because we’re experiencing them as 31-year-olds it doesn’t have the same impact. The 5-year-olds listening to Lady Gaga are ripping their hair out because they’ve never seen or heard anything like it.”

Don’t be hatin’ on Beth Ditto. She said some terrific things about Gaga.
