It’s been a while since we’ve had a new Rock Band game. After Rock Band 3, people wondered where Harmonix could take their wildly popular music series and it turns out there was only one way to go – backwards.

Harmonix Project Director Matthew Nordhaus made the announcement via G4TV. The game immediately conjures up images of their first two music games ‘Frequency’ and ‘Amplitude’. ‘Frequency’ was a hugely popular music game, and the “Freqs” that loved it were excited to see them move on to a sequel then the Guitar Hero titles.

Rock Band Blitz is much like those original titles as you’ll control every single track of the song yourself, gliding from instrument to instrument and capturing notes to get the music playing.

As you’ll see in the below announcement this will be a downloadable title for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. Best of all? It’s compatible with every song you’ve already bought for Rock Band. The game comes with 25 new songs that will also be playable in Rock Band 3, and the game will continue to get support via new songs each and every week.

According to Wikipedia, the following songs have been confirmed:

“Always” by Blink-182

“Jessie’s Girl” by Rick Springfield

“Metal Health (Bang Your Head)” by Quiet Riot

“Billionaire” by Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars

“Once Bitten, Twice Shy” by Great White

“Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People
