If your grandmother has recently friended you on Facebook or followed you on Twitter, you’re not alone.

The website myvouchercodes.co.uk recently conducted a survey in which it asked people over 60 about their social media habits. It yielded some interesting results.

About 22% of respondents had at least one social media account. Of those, 71% are on Facebook, 34% are on Twitter, and 9% are on LinkedIn.

When asked about their reasons for signing up, 51% did so at the encouragement of younger family members, 25% wanted to reconnect with old friends, and 20% just thought it was a good way to keep in touch with loved ones.

Furthermore, a recent study from Pew indicates that among internet users overall, 8% are between 50 and 64, and 6% of internet users over 65 are on Twitter. Those numbers are both 4% higher than they were in November of 2010.

Remember that next time you think about posting that photo of yourself next to a beer bong.
