Jared Leto Almost Attended 2014 Oscars in Drag

Since Jared Leto was the frontrunner (and eventual winner) of the 2014 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work as transgendered, HIV-afflicted Rayon in ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ talk shifted to how about whether or not the actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman would wear his long locks in a wet bun at the Academy Awards. He eventually went with an eggshell, Saint Laurent tux jacket and loose locks, but that wasn’t always the plan!

Leto, 42, almost dressed in drag as his character of Rayon for the event.

“I thought about dragging up for the Oscars, going as Rayon, because I knew that she would have loved to be there,” Leto, who largely abandoned his acting career for the past decade in favor of the rock star life, said. Clearly, he loved his character and knew her well.

But he decided against it, and even acknowledged that women have it tough since getting ready is a such a time-consuming chore for the female sex.

“It’s so much work for girls to get ready,” Leto admitted. “I was brought up by my mom, so I always had an appreciation of women. But now I have more respect for the process. It’s a lot, what women have to do to themselves. But in the end, when you put that final dash of lipstick on and your look all comes together, it really is a glorious reward.”

Hear that, ladies? Jared Leto understands how much work it is to get ready, so next time your BF or your dude whines and moans that you are taking too long in the bathroom or that you are going to be late for dinner or a movie because of your prepping and primping, remind him that Jared Leto “gets” it and wouldn’t be rushing you! Put that in your back pocket, gals!

In all seriousness, Leto also explained his position on accolades and industry pats on the back like Academy Awards.

“I don’t [care about awards],” Leto said. “But I would never say, ‘I don’t give a s–t about the Oscars,’ because it’s not the whole truth. It’s not about the shiny, naked golden man, or the pat on the back. It’s about being able to stand on a world stage for two minutes in front of a billion people and say something that is meaningful, important to you.”

His speech called out the real life Rayons of the world and those dealing with HIV and AIDS. It was a classy move.
