Television and film funnyman Jonathan Winters died last night (April 11) of natural causes at his California home. He was 87.

The comedian -- who wasn't nearly as famous as he deserved to be -- was best known to modern audiences for his work alongside Robin Williams on the sitcom 'Mork & Mindy' as Mearth, the titular couple's Orkan son who aged backward (and, through no fault of his own, helped the show jump the shark), and for playing Lenny in the comedy classic 'It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.'

He was also a favorite guest of both Jack Paar's and Johnny Carson's on 'The Tonight Show,' and in his later years, Winters did a lot of voice work -- most recently reprising his role as Papa Smurf in 'The Smurfs' and throughout the '90s in cartoons like 'Captain Planet,' 'Aaahh!!! Real Monsters' and 'Animaniacs.'

A statement on his website reads simply:

Jonathan Winters passed away of natural causes at his Montecito, California home at 6:45 p.m. PDT on April 11, 2013, surrounded by family and friends.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Winters.
