Kony 2012 is a viral campaign to spread the word about Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in central Africa, which has abducted more than 60,000 children since 1987 and forced them to commit human rights atrocities. The campaign, run by Invisible Children, urges public figures in positions of power to use their celebrity to spread the word, and numerous musicians have responded, including Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and more.

The 30-minute Kony 2012 video details the history of his crimes and gives viewers ideas for how they can help, one of which is by supporting the Invisible Children organization. Rihanna saw the video and tweeted, “PLEASE go to http://www.Invisiblechildren.com. Even if its 10 minutes… Trust me, you NEED to know about this!”

Bieber tweeted, “It is time to make him known. I’m calling on ALL MY FANS, FRIENDS, and FAMILY to come together and #STOPKONY.” Swift wrote, “At the end of my life, I want to say that the world we’ve left behind is … a place where children, no matter where they live, can have a childhood free from fear.”

Ryan Seacrest chimed in, “Was going to sleep last night and saw ur tweets about #StopKony…watched in bed, was blown away,” while Diddy posted, “You must all see this!!!! NOW if u dont know what #StopKONY2012 is about, watch this.”

The Kony 2012 video had been viewed more than 56 million times through Thursday. The campaign pledges to continue working to ensure that Kony is captured by the end of 2012.
