Lena Dunham Reacts to Jezebel’s Vogue Retouched Photo Scandal: ‘It Felt Gross’ [Video]

Lena Dunham is not one to shy away from speaking her mind. So when feminist website Jezebel offered $10,000 to anyone who could send them unretouched photos from the ‘Girls’ star’s Vogue cover shoot, Dunham respectfully — and eloquently — shared her peace.

“That was messed up. I think Jezebel is really smart and funny. I think it’s just like once you’ve been attacked that way it’s hard to enjoy,” the actress and writer revealed in a recent interview. “It’s hard to enjoy once you feel like they’ve made such a monumental error in their approach to feminism.”

Jezebel’s reasoning behind their request was to call out the fashion giant for their photo editing, which can lead to unrealistic expectations about women and women’s bodies. Their intentions might have been in the right place — but the execution felt sleazy and more of a personal attack against Dunham.

“For me it was just sort of — I can’t be half-in. It felt gross,” Dunham explained. She also shared that she was nervous to see the unedited images herself. “I was like, ‘maybe I’m delusional in this and I don’t look how I think I look,” she recalled.

However, as everyone who has seen the un-retouched photos now knows, the photos were hardly edited.

“It was the most minimal retouching. I felt completely respected by Vogue. I felt like, ‘thank you for removing the one line from my face because I’m 27 years old and shouldn’t have that there. I appreciate this,'” she said.

“And instead of saying, ‘Hey, we kind of f—ed up, these pictures aren’t that retouched; Lena, enjoy the Vogue spread you’ve been excited about since you were 8 years old, [Jezebel] was like: ‘She’s not retouched, but she could have been.’ It was this weird almost like political maneuvering that I just had a lot of trouble respecting,” the bold star concluded.

Tell ’em, girl. Check out the video above around the 52:00 minute mark to see what Lena said.
