Like the entire world, Mariah Carey‘s heart has been heavy in the past couple of weeks as she continues to mourn the loss of her friend and musical icon, Whitney Houston.

Carey cleared her schedule last weekend, to make sure that she was in Newark, N.J. at the New Hope Baptist Church for Houston’s heart-tugging funeral. The emotional day was telecast live for the world to see, but for the 41-year-old singer, she was up-close to the moving three-hour service.

“I’m almost incapable of talking about this still,” Carey recently said while appearing on ‘Good Morning America’ (quotes via Music Rooms). “It’s very heavy emotionally.”

When asked to describe the service in person, Carey said it was a “gorgeous” way to say goodbye to the legendary singer who left us many years too soon. “[The service was] such a class act,” noted Carey. “The way she went out and the way family dealt with it, I was very moved.”

Carey’s professional and personal relationship with Houston began back in 1998 when the two powerhouse vocalists recorded a duet of ‘When You Believe.’ Their friendship and love for one another was seen clear by all, even those who speculated there was a bit of a rivalry going on as unique and memorable voices of our times.

“It was great,” Carey said of their friendship. “I don’t think people could ever understand our relationship. There was always this supposed rivalry in the beginning, and then we did the duet and we became friends. I saw her toward the end. I loved her. We all loved her … May she rest in peace.”

Last week, Carey released a special video to her YouTube channel of some behind the scenes moments shared with the late icon. Check it out below.
