A lot's happened since 2010.

One Direction was created on the UK's X Factor five years ago, and the members' individual decisions to join the group brought them each a level of fame that most of us can barely wrap our head around. When Zayn Malik departed in April, the remaining members pushed through their growing pains and presented a united front, refining what can now be considered their signature arena-rock sound on Made In The A.M. They've certainly earned their "extended hiatus," and — as bittersweet as it was — the group's performance on last night's X Factor finale was a fitting way to say goodbye (for now).

The boys sang live from London's Wembley Stadium, performing "History" and "Infinity" from Made in the A.M.  Harry Styles, who never met a loud floral print he didn't like, dressed for the special occasion this was in a red Gucci suit. Louis Tomlinson kept things GQ-smooth in a well tailored grey blazer. Niall Horan was dressed for an autumn wedding. Liam Payne's look was more "university teaching assistant who is very rich." Their individuality has always been a strength!

Fittingly, their rendition of "History" had a sentimental end-of-the-movie feel, with photos of 1D through the years flashing on a screen behind them. The group's gratitude to fans has always been another strength of theirs, and Liam stayed on message with a thank-you after the song. "We're sad that we're going away for a little while, but we need it," Liam said earnestly, while Harry made goofy faces in the background. Way to keep things very 1D till the end, guys.

But to quote a phrase that trended on Twitter last night (December 14), #ThisIsNotTheEndofOneDirection — it's not even the start of their hiatus quite yet. They'll jump in James Corden's Carpool Karaoke ride on the Late Late Show this week.
