One Direction aren’t known for their rapping skills, but that doesn’t mean the boys can’t spit a few verses … As long as these verses are from ’90s sitcom theme songs. During a visit to NovaFM in Australia, the five guys from One Direction rapped the entire opening theme from Will Smith‘s smash television show ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’

This isn’t the first time the guys have performed the ‘Fresh Prince’ rap, however, since they used to perform it at live shows when they first started out as a boy band. “It was originally my idea,” Louis Tomlinson explained. “When we first came off the show and were doing live gigs, if any of the mics packed in and if any of the music packed in or failed, we decided that was going to be our get out. We’d just start doing ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ so then we decided to pull it out at a couple of the gigs.”

Of course, the DJ at NovaFM asked the 1D boys to perform it for the fans who were tuning in, and they of course obliged. The DJ actually asked them to “freestyle” it, which had the boys looking a little worried since freestyling usually entails rapping off of the top of your head over a pre-recorded beat. However, their looks of doubt turned to smiles when they realized he was just asking for them to rap the ‘Fresh Prince’ intro we have all grown to love.

Before they began to rap, 20-year-old Louis took a deep breath and said, “This one’s for my mum.” The quintet quickly broke into the “In West Philadelphia, born and raised / On the playground is where I’d spend most of my days,” line. Their tones were spot-on, channeling Will Smith’s original version perfectly. What do you think of their rap? Check it out below.
