Hallelujah! Pope Benedict Joins Twitter
Pope Benedict XVI may be the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church with a tradition dating back more than 2,000 years, but that doesn’t mean he’s not up on the latest technology. In fact, the Vatican recently revealed the pope’s Twitter handle and said that he’ll start tweeting to followers on Dec. 12.
The pope’s Twitter name will be “@pontifex,” a handle which has some significance. “The handle is a good one. It means ‘pope’ and it also means ‘bridge builder,'” said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican.
But Benedict probably won’t be tweeting about his love of ‘Grumpy Cat’ or ‘Overly Attached Girlfriend.’ Instead, his tweets will be spiritual in nature and he’ll only tweet when and how often he likes, said Burke.
The first round of papal tweets will be responses to questions sent to “#askpontifex.” The tweets themselves will initially be provided in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French, with more languages to come later.
Now if you’ll excuse us, we need to ask the pope if he thinks ‘Gangnam Style’ has finally run its course.
