Russell Brand is famous — make that infamous — for his cheeky humor. But not all of his jokes go over well (and not just the ones about Katy Perry).

That was especially true at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London on Tuesday (Sept. 3), when his commentary got him kicked out. What happened?

Brand was accepting his trophy for Oracle of the Year when he went off on Hugo Boss, the clothing giant sponsoring the event for roughly $390,000. The retailer produced Nazi uniforms, a detail from Hugo which they’ve tried to distance themselves as best they can. In 2011 the company expressed “its profound regret to those who suffered harm or hardship at the factory run by Hugo Ferdinand Boss under National Socialist rule.”

That distance was closed when Brand took the stage.

“If any of you know a little bit about history and fashion, you’ll know it was Hugo Boss (who) made the uniforms for the Nazis,” Brand told the crowd (via the New York Daily News). “The Nazis did have flaws, but they did look f—ing fantastic, let’s face it, while they were killing people on the basis of their religion and sexuality!”

When the crowd was a little too shocked and awed to giggle, Brand explained himself further.

“I’m a comedian and it’s my job to make jokes about things. Hugo Boss, it’s fair enough, he might not have known! ‘We’re selling a lot of these f—ing (uniforms), they’re flying off the shelves!’” he ranted. He then quipped, “Don’t take life too seriously, soon we’ll all be in the grave.” He closed with, “Oh f—!”

Brand was reportedly then kicked out of the afterparty, but had the last word on Twitter.
