You may have heard about thieves using devices to 'skim' your debit card information when you put gas in your car and pay at the pump. The Victoria County Sheriff's Office says it's happened a few times here in the Crossroads recently.

According to a published report in the Victoria Advocate, at least 2 skimming devices have been discovered at gas stations in the county, one at Raisin Windmill gas station a few months ago. Officials say the scammers are getting more adept at the scam, using a cable attached to a USB flash drive to collect the card's information.

This method is happening in larger cities more so than here in Victoria like Houston and Dallas but, that doesn't mean it can't happen to you.

You can help protect yourself from the scam by using caution. I always examine the card slot for anything that looks odd before I place my card in it. You can also check your bank account regularly to catch any fraud early and, you can also choose the credit option with your card or, you could just opt to pay inside.
