Then + Now: Soleil Moon Frye from ‘Punky Brewster’

Soleil Moon Frye Punky Brewster
NBC

Back in the day, ‘Punky Brewster’ was a fashion icon and imaginary BFF to little girls everywhere, but where did she go when the show ended?

Then:

Soleil Moon Frye starred as the titular character on the ’80s sitcom ‘Punky Brewster,’ who was a spunky little girl many kids either wanted to be or wanted to be friends with.

Her little orphan story was too precious: Her dad abandoned her family, and then her mom walked out on her and her dog Brandon. Punky takes up residence in a vacant apartment and quickly befriends the manager, Henry, who later adopts her and the two form a sort of ‘Odd Couple’ pairing. Punky is colorful and fun, and Henry is the straight-laced father figure she needs to keep her in check and teach valuable life lessons.

As Punky, Soleil Moon Frye inspired the fashion choices of many young girls with her quirky, mismatched style and funky accessories.

Soleil Moon Frye went on to make guest appearances on several ’90s TV shows, including ‘Saved by the Bell,’ ‘Friends,’ and ‘The Wonder Years.’ She also lent her voice to animated shows like ‘Tiny Toon Adventures.’ From 2000 to 2003, Frye starred with her good friend Melissa Joan Hart on the ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ TV series.

In 2004, Frye directed a documentary called ‘Sonny Boy’ about a two-week trip she took with her father, who has Alzheimer’s, and it went on to win Best Documentary at the San Diego Film Festival.

These days, she maintains a very active Twitter account, where she has almost 1.5 million followers.
