Today in Hip-Hop: Jay-Z and Beyonce Announce Their On the Run Tour

On this day, April 28, in hip-hop history...

2014: The entertainment world's most famous power couple prepared for lift off.

In what was probably the music industry's closest thing to Batman and Superman partnering up for the first time, Jay-Z and Beyoncé announced their On the Run tour, a 16-date trek that saw the two entertainers shut down stadium after stadium as they performed selections from their individually awesome catalogs.

The tour had been rumored in the months leading up to Hov and Bey's official announcement, and the two having released albums in the year beforehand definitely made the whispers seem more than a little plausible. In the fall of 2013, Hov hit the road for his Magna Carta World Tour, a collection of show dates that supported his Magna Carta album. From the April 2013 to March 2014, Bey had been on the road for her epic The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, a journey supporting her self-titled 2013 album (which probably set the groundwork for the instantaneous album rollouts we know today).

While some might have scoffed at the idea of the '03 Bonnie and Clyde hitting the road so soon after lengthy individual tours, nothing's impossible for the hardest-working couple in show business. And make no mistake, Hov and Bey definitely put in some work, as their tour ultimately ended up grossing over $100 million.

Four years later, in 2018, the stars once again aligned perfectly for another epic joint tour from Hova and the Queen Bey. On March 12, 2018, Bey uploaded three Instagram posts that included tour posters promoting the second edition of her and Hova's On the Run Tour.

As you can see, history repeats itself, and in this case, it's definitely for the best.
