Look for more and better movies and other presentations at Victoria's Leo J. Welder Center, thanks to a sound system upgrade to 16-channel digital surround sound.

According to a report in the Victoria Advocate, the finishing touches on the new system are expected to be finished in the next few weeks. Victoria College Director of Cultural Affairs Sue Prudhomme says the upgrade will "usher in a new era of cinema possibilities."

Improvements began a few years ago around the same time that the Victoria TX Independent Film Festival began, and makes economic sense since it costs as much as $5,000-$6,000 to rent a projection system just for the weekend.

The cost of the upgrade is just over $26,500, half of which is paid for by the city's Hotel Occupancy Tax.
