Okay…..we always hate to be an “I told you so” type of person….but last week if you missed the third annual Art Car Central around the Nave Museum and the downtown area, you basically missed a parking lot full of original art.

If you were one of the few that did miss this plethora of original art, we have done you the courtesy of showing you some great original masterpieces.  And we’re looking forward to Art Car Central being bigger and better next year.  And don’t forget that the Nave is featuring Dave Best’s artwork “Prayer Wheels” that is on display at the Nave Museum through July 1.  The Nave Museum is located at 306 W. Commercial Street and is open is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1-5 pm and Thursdays, 1-8 pm.  There is an admission fee of $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children under 12, students and seniors.

And while we’re at it, here are five things you can do for your own Memorial Day Weekend:

  • You will definitely want to spend some time at one of the lakes or at Barton Springs Pool.  It can already by very hot by the end of May.
  • If you plan to go to the park in Austin be sure to go early. Austin is an outdoorsy city and everyone else will have the same idea.  Lake Travis is fairly popular with the party crowd on Memorial Day weekend, but if you want to rent a boat or get on a party boat, again, you have to do so well in advance.
  • Be sure to visit Bolivar Flats and the Houston Audubon Society’s Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary, a unique area combining salt marsh, mud flats and beach, each habitat quite different from the other. Every year hundreds of thousands of birds discover that Bolivar Flats is a special place.  Anyone can drive on the beach for free. But if you park on the beach you must have a parking permit on your windshield. The fee for the permit is $10.00 a year. To get the permit you can find a merchant on Bolivar that sells them and purchase it there.
  • In San Antonio, explore the history of South Texas at the grand opening of this 20,000 square-foot, two-story building hosting permanent exhibitions, historical collections, and state of the art museum technology. The permanent exhibition will feature artifacts from early Texas history focused on the interwoven Anglo-Saxon, Tejano, and Indian cultures.
  • And in Corpus Christi it’s the Texas State Aquarium. Get a close up look at underwater life of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean at this 9-acre marine life aquarium, which also features birds and other animal species. Exhibits include a swamp complete with alligator and a sea turtle tank, and ongoing demos keep you well entertained.
