Whitney Houston Was ‘Excited’ to Be Recording New Music

Whitney Houston was in the studio working on new music for her upcoming film, ‘Sparkle,’ just five days before her death, and according to producer Harvey Mason Jr., the ill-fated star was “excited” about the future.

Houston was focusing on the song ‘Celebrate,’ written by R. Kelly, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The tune is a duet with co-star Jordin Sparks, and is expected to play over the end credits of the film, which follows a group of three sisters and their rise to stardom.

“She’s doesn’t lounge around,” Mason told THR after Houston’s death. “The last session we did on Tuesday night (Feb. 7), after we finished, we were dancing around the booth and laughing and just having a good time listening to what we had accomplished. Her demeanor the last two weeks was very upbeat. She was in a good place.”

He added about the duet, “She was really adamant about making sure Jordin had enough time to shine. She kept saying, ‘Let Jordin shine, that’s her moment.’ I thought that was pretty cool. She loves the new crop of singers. She’s not the kind of girl who’s competitive and mean to other singers.”

‘Celebrate’ is one of two songs Houston recorded for ‘Sparkle.’ The second is the gospel standard ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow,’ which will also appear on the movie’s soundtrack, due out on RCA. ‘Sparkle’ is expected to be released in theaters in early August.
