William Shatner Covers Queen, Black Sabbath and More on Star-Studded New Album, ‘Seeking Major Tom’

He’s definitely best known for his acting résumé, but William Shatner isn’t just the guy who played James T. Kirk, T.J. Hooker, and Denny Crane; he’s actually enjoyed a long, albeit sporadic and rather irony-drenched, recording career, releasing four albums (including a double live release) over the last 25 years.

As luck would have it, Shatner’s been back in the recording studio lately, and he’s ready to return with his latest audio offering.

Titled ‘Seeking Major Tom,’ the collection of space-themed covers collects a truly eyebrow-raising list of guest musicians, including Bootsy Collins, members of the Allman Brothers Band, Alice in Chains, Yes, the Strokes, and Brad Paisley — and those are really just a few of the names Shatner corralled.

The list of songs covered is just as impressively eclectic, including David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity,’ Steve Miller’s ‘Space Cowboy,’ Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man,’ and Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man.’ Shatner doesn’t sing, mind you — these are all spoken-word pieces — but who needs to sing when you have John Wetton of Asia backing you for your cover of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody?’

‘Seeking Major Tom’ is scheduled for an October 11 release. In the meantime, you can have a look at the full list of songs and guest performers — and listen to Shatner’s version of ‘Iron Man’ — here.
