Delta Airlines Hit with Lawsuit by Texas Woman Over Plane Crash
A Texas resident is taking a massive airline head-on after being involved in a terrifying airplane crash.
Marthinus Lourens was one of 80 passengers on a Delta Airlines flight that took off from Minneapolis to Toronto. As the plane touched down in Toronto a gust of wind slammed into the plane, causing it to flip over, leaving passengers hanging upside down in their seats.
Peter Koukov, a passenger on the flight told CNN, “We were upside down hanging like bats."
AIRCRAFT GOES BELLY UP WITH 80 PASSENGERS INSIDE
As the airplane went belly-up, the plane began falling apart but for good reason. The safety design of the aircraft caused a wing to snap off, possibly preventing much more damage.
“The airplane was designed to take a hit like this,” Goelz told CNN.
Passengers were able to get unbuckled from their seats and get to emergency exits to safely escape the plane. Thankfully, no fatalities occurred, but at least 20 passengers were physically injured.
DELTA OFFERS THOUSANDS IN COMPENSATION
As a result, Delta offered each passenger $30,000. A spokesperson for the airline said the payment “has no strings attached and does not affect rights.”
CRASH RESULTS IN NEW LAWSUITS FILED
However, there are some passengers who are looking for more. One of those is Marthinus Lourens from Texas. Lourens hit Delta and their subsidiary, Endeavor Air, with a lawsuit. The lawsuit is seeking compensation for physical injuries, emotional injuries, and economic losses.
The suit claims the crash was caused by the flight crew’s “gross negligence and recklessness.”
A deeper investigation is underway to find out what went wrong. Peter Goelz, a CNN aviation analyst and former National Transportation Safety Board managing director explained, "They’ll turn out a preliminary report in 30 days that I think will go a long way towards pointing to what happened.”
