Dr. Dre Thinks Hip-Hop Is More About Quantity Over Quality Today
Hip-hop has come a long way since Dr. Dre released his sophomore album 2001 and he thinks there's been a shift in perspective for rappers currently dominating the rap landscape.
On Saturday (Nov. 16), Beats 1 published an interview with Dre and Jimmy Iovine where the two music moguls reminisce about Dre's second LP on what is the album's 20th anniversary. In the two decades since the classic LP's release, Dre says he thinks things have changed as far as artists' outlook on the craft.
"Right now, I have to really, really search hard to find something I like, as far as hip-hop goes," Dre said. "I think it's just about the substance. Now it feels like it's a little more quantity over quality. 'Made a song last night, I need to put it out tomorrow.'"
For things to change, Dre thinks artists have to make a hard decision.
"What are you gonna dedicate yourself to, the art or the money? You know, it's that simple," he added.
In other Dre-related news, the rap mogul will be honored prior to the upcoming Grammy Awards for his production legacy at the 13th annual Producers & Engineers Wing.
"Dr. Dre is an influential force in music," said Deborah Dugan, President/CEO of the Recording Academy, in a press release. "Dre breaks boundaries and inspires music creators across every genre. His evolution as a producer solidifies him as a leader of the pack within our industry, and we watch in amazement as he continues to shape the future of music."
The event, which will kick off the Grammy Week celebration, will take place on Jan. 22, 2020 ahead of the 62nd annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 26.
