For almost four hours, student riders were stuck on the Iron Shark at Pleasure Pier in Galveston, Texas. Many videos on TikTok showed riders who got stuck on their way up before the ride stopped. According to multiple reports, the ride was stuck for almost 4 hours.

Each kid was rescued individually by the Galveston Fire Department.

The ride first got stuck around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28. Pleasure Pier immediately called the Galveston Fire Department. Firefighters brought out the rescue ladder and rescued the riders one by one. The ladder was up at 105 feet for the rescue, and it took about 20 minutes to safely bring each child down.

Rides get stuck as a safety measure to protect riders.

Even though getting stuck on a ride is a terrifying experience for many, the ride is actually functioning as designed to keep riders safe. Terry Turney, Chief Operating Officer of Pleasure, spoke with KHOU.
"The ride experienced a malfunction at its initial ascenthowever, as designed, it immediately stopped to keep everyone safe."

Pleasure Pier was evacuated during the rescue, and the cause of the malfunction is under investigation. Students on the ride were on an end-of-school field trip for STEM Academy Middle School and STEM Academy High School, both of which are located in the Houston Independent School District.
