Woman Refuses to Cover Co-Worker’s Shift After They Skipped Work for Concert
A woman on Reddit drew mixed reactions from readers after sharing why she refused to pick up a shift for her co-worker.
"I work in retail, and my co-worker, Emma, texted me last week asking if I could cover her shift. She didn’t give a reason, just said she 'really needed the day off.' I was already scheduled that day, so I said I couldn’t," she began.
Later on, the woman found out via social media that her co-worker had gone to a concert during the shift time she asked to be covered.
"Later, I saw her Instagram story—she was at a concert with her friends during the shift she wanted me to cover. I didn’t say anything at work, but a few days later, Emma asked again if I’d cover for her next week," she continued.
"I politely declined, saying I didn’t want to take on extra shifts when she’s not being honest about why she needs them off. Now she’s mad, saying I’m being judgmental and unsupportive. A couple of co-workers think I should just let it go and help out," she concluded.

Users in the comments section had mixed reactions to the story.
"Maintaining your privacy is not being 'dishonest.' She, you, or anyone can ask for a shift swap or shift coverage without being obligated to explain themselves. It's not 'dishonest' to keep your private life private. Unless they are blatantly lying about why they need time off in a play for sympathy, their reasons are for not wanting to work a shift are, quite frankly, not your business," one person wrote.
"She needs to learn to plan things when she's not working. At least [she was] not lying about it," another commented.
"Honestly the concert doesn't even matter here to me. If you want the extra hours, take the shift. If you don't, then you don't. You shouldn't be expected to work more because she has other plans," someone else argued.
"It doesn't matter why she wants it off. If you want to pick up/cover a shift, then do it. If you don't want to, then don't. It's pretty simple," another weighed in.
