Just How Hot Does the Inside of a Car Get in Summertime?
The dog days of summer are here and the heat has been unreal! The heat index has already passed or gotten close to 110 degrees in much of Texas. With this brutal heat, it got me thinking about just how high the temperature can get inside of a car with the windows up. According to noheatstroke.org, 950 children have died due to Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke (PVH) since 1998. Every one of these deaths could have been prevented!
HOW HOT DOES THE INSIDE OF A CAR GET?
The actual numbers will depend on a number of different variables: Are you parked in the sun or shade? Outdoor temperature? Color of the car? Type of upholstery?
The fastest rise in temperature occurs as soon as you turn off the AC. If the car is parked in the sun, the temperature can rise more than one degree per minute for the first 30 minutes. This means if you spend half an hour in the store on a 90-degree day, the inside of your car could be around 120 degrees when you return, according to this published article.
IT GETS EVEN WORSE:
After an hour, the average in-car temperature is 43 degrees higher than the outdoor temperature. After 90 minutes, this rises to 48 degrees higher. Therefore, when it’s 90 degrees outside, it could reach an incredible 138 degrees in your parked car! Just do the math on the 100+ degree days here in South Texas! Please stay safe this Summer!
