Just days after a King of the Hill announced a comeback, longtime voice actor Jonathan Joss was shot and killed Sunday evening in San Antonio.

Known for voicing John Redcorn on King of the Hill from Seasons 2 through 13, Joss had already recorded lines for the show’s upcoming Hulu revival. He’s set to appear in Episode 2 of the new season when it premieres.

But in a shocking turn of events, Joss’s life came to a violent end near his former home, which had recently burned down. According to San Antonio police, officers responded to a shooting around 7 p.m. and found Joss near the road with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The alleged shooter, a neighbor, was arrested just a block away.

Tensions rise before the murder.

Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, posted a lengthy statement claiming the couple had endured two years of escalating threats and harassment in their neighborhood, many of which were allegedly fueled by homophobia.

He described discovering the burned remains of one of their dogs before a man approached them, hurled anti-gay slurs, and opened fire. “Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life,” de Gonzales wrote.

San Antonio Police deny evidence of a hate crime.

However, the San Antonio Police Department quickly issued a statement saying there is “no evidence to indicate Mr. Joss’ murder was related to his sexual orientation.” The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.

The circumstances surrounding the house fire, the alleged harassment, and the fatal shooting are still unclear. Some now wonder if there’s more to this tragedy than police are letting on.

Joss’s death hit just as King of the Hill fans were gearing up to celebrate the show’s big comeback. Instead of riding a wave of nostalgia, Texas is now mourning one of the voices that made the series iconic.

Joss also held roles in Parks and Recreation, Ray Donovan, True Grit, Tulsa King, and The Magnificent Seven, among other notable projects.
