Sam Smith Takes On Amy Winehouse, ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’
The late, great Amy Winehouse's records still speak for themselves after the singer's 2011 death, but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate an honorary update every now and again.
Sam Smith, who will appear on Disclosure's upcoming album, took on Winehouse's "Tears Dry on Their Own," the fourth single off of 2006's Back to Black, at France's Main Square Festival earlier this month. In a matter of seconds, the concert series' patrons evolved from typical concert-goers into willing disciples of Smith's makeshift church. And let us say in unison: Amen.
"All I can ever be to you / Is the darkness that we knew / And this regret I've got accustomed to," Smith croons in the video from the performance above. And, as the tune famously borrows from Marvin Gaye's and Tammi Terrell's Motown hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," Smith eventually moved to cover the 1967 hit as well. A show and a bit of time travel—Sam's fans certainly got their money's worth.
The Main Square Festival is a three day-event annual event around the Arras, France area that was founded in 2004 by Live Nation. The fair also included performances from Hozier, Charli XCX, James Bay and Muse this year.
What do you think of Smith's covers? Check 'em out, and be sure to catch Amy, Asif Kapadia's documentary that follows the short life of Winehouse, in theaters now.
