Around 5 am, 36-year-old Christopher Santiago went outside after hearing someone trying to break into his vehicle. As Santiago made his way outside, he was immediately confronted by criminals and shot at.

A bullet hit Santiago in his abdomen as the suspects jumped into an SUV and fled the scene. Santiago was taken to the hospital where he received emergency surgery, however, doctors were unable to remove a bullet at that time.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said, "I have no doubt that they were trying to kill that victim in this instance."

Santiago admits, after this altercation, he is considering buying a gun. "We had our garage door clickers in our car," Santiago said. "It would've taken them no time to open the garage and walk into our house and they had a gun, I had nothing."

Sheriff Salazar believes the suspects may be involved in various other crimes. Surveillance video showed a group of suspects stealing a Lexus from just a few blocks away from Santiago's house.

Sheriff Salazar advises everyone to "Get in the habit of, at a certain time each night, get out to your car, sanitize it, get everything out of there, lock it, take your keys," he added, "We certainly recommend you put a video camera on your car. If you could get one with a motion sensor on it, even better."
