The Texas Legislature meets every two years for just 140 days, which isn’t a lot of time to make big decisions. One big proposal already making waves is Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), a private school voucher program that could change the way schools are funded in Texas.

What is SB 2?

SB 2 would give money to families who want to send their kids to private schools or pay for tutoring. Here’s how it would work:

  • Who gets it? Every school-aged child in Texas is eligible, but if there are too many applications, priority goes to lower-income families or kids with disabilities.
  • How much money? $10,000 per year for private school students, $11,500 for students with disabilities, and $2,000 for other educational services.
  • Any restrictions? Private schools don’t have to follow the same special education laws as public schools, and they can choose which students to accept.

Why Are People Concerned?

Many Texans, including teachers and parents, are worried about SB 2 for a few reasons:

  • Less Money for Public Schools – The state has set aside $1 billion for this program, which means less funding for public schools, many of which are already struggling.
  • Fewer Teachers, Bigger Problems – Public schools are already facing teacher shortages, and less funding could make things worse.
  • Limited Oversight – Private schools don’t have to follow the same rules as public schools, which means students may not receive the same level of education or support.
  • Not Enough to Cover Costs – The voucher may not fully cover private school tuition, leaving many families paying out of pocket.

Texans are divided about this bill. One on side it helps give access to private schools for many families who wouldn't financially be able to even consider that option. On the other side, if the vouchers are passed, there would be money taken away from an already depleted and struggling public education.
