Texas Uber Driver Found Dead with Gunshot Wounds
Police first thought they were working a late-night car crash, but when deputies took a closer look at the victim, a young Uber driver, they realized something far more chilling had happened: he hadn’t been hit by a car, he’d been shot.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said patrol units responded around 11 p.m. in north Harris County, after receiving a report about a man lying on the side of the road.
When a hit-and-run became a homicide
At first, investigators believed the case was a fatal hit-and-run, and the Vehicle Crimes Unit began processing the scene. But deputies later discovered the man, identified as 28-year-old Quoc Nguyen, had suffered a gunshot wound.
Nguyen lived in the area where he was found, according to HCSO. Investigators are still trying to determine whether the shooting happened at that location or if Nguyen’s body was left there.
Police search for answers.
“We're attempting to contact family, find out exactly what the circumstances were this evening, why he was here, how he ended up at this location,” said HCSO Sgt. Jason Brown. “We're also in the process of trying to view video from the area and see if we can find out exactly what happened.”
The case has now been turned over to the Homicide Unit, which is leading the investigation.
Uber confirmed Nguyen was a driver for the company.
“This is a devastating tragedy, and our thoughts are with the driver’s family and friends,” Uber said in a statement. “We are in touch with law enforcement and are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.”
Uber added that its Public Safety Team has been in contact with Harris County authorities. The team is available 24/7 to work with police, respond to urgent needs, and guide investigators through the process of obtaining information.
How to help
Anyone with information about Nguyen or the circumstances of the case is urged to call the HCSO Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-8477 (TIPS).
