After nearly ten months of unanswered questions, closure may finally be coming for a Texas family.

The Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team announced that they’ve located a sunken vessel believed to be the one that carried a missing family from Troy, Texas.

An entire family missing in Alaska waters.

42-year-old David Maynard, his wife Mary, and their sons 11-year-old Colton and 7-year-old Brantley, who disappeared on August 3, 2024, after their boat capsized in Alaska.

The boat was carrying four other individuals at the time, who were rescued. An extensive search by the Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS) and volunteers failed to locate the missing family.

A recent discovery begins to close the case.

A recent discovery came in early May 2025 when a remotely operated vehicle located a sunken vessel resting 180 feet below the surface. The boat was positively identified as the one the Maynards had boarded the night they vanished.

On May 27 and 28, dive teams, along with Alaska Wildlife Troopers and several support organizations, recovered the remains of 3 bodies from the vessel.

Those remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and next of kin has already been notified.

As of now, dive operations are ongoing in hopes of recovering the fourth family member.

The discovery brings a tragic, but important, step forward in what has been a haunting mystery for both the family’s hometown and the state of Alaska.
