A man is under arrest after an unbelievable 17-vehicle crash left 5 dead, including a child and infant in Austin, Texas.

On Thursday, March 16, a major crash in Austin left 5 dead and 11 people taken to the hospital. The crash, which has not been fully detailed yet, happened around 11:30 pm.

"We were able to get all the critical patients off the scene within about 40 minutes and, considering how complex the scene was, that's pretty impressive," Capt. Krista Stedman, public information officer for Austin-Travis County EMS said in a statement.

14 Hours to Clear the Wreckage

The crash had a total of 17 vehicles involved and took nearly 14 hours to clear. "This incident was incredibly chaotic, and it was spread out over about a tenth of a mile," Stedman said.

Photos of the scene show incredible wreckage spread across a Texas highway. Car parts were scattered across lanes, wheels were completely dislodged from the frame, and front ends were completely smashed in.

Now, police have released the name of the person responsible for all the chaos. 37-year-old Solomun Weldekeal Araya has been charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, according to Austin police.
