What Is TIDAL? Jay Z’s New Music Service Gets Help From High-Profile Friends
Jay Z's new music streaming site, TIDAL, is getting a huge boost from some big-name celebrities. In a mysterious new ad for the site — which boasts high-fidelity sound quality, HD video quality and a curated content discovery experience — Beyoncé, Kanye West, Chris Martin, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Madonnna, Usher and a whole bunch more bold-face names convene for a high-level meeting.
That's the extent of the video: showing just how many huge artists are backing Spotify's latest competitor. We should know more about what to expect later this afternoon after a live-streaming event on the TIDAL website beginning at 5PM ET.
Celebrities also tweeted their support for the new site, with Usher posting, "It's time to turn the tide and make music history. Show you are part of the movement by turning your profile pic blue. #TIDALforALL." Joining the movement, Beyonce, Calvin Harris and Deadmau5 also changed their profile pictures to a bright blue space.
Nicki Minaj, meanwhile, encouraged her followers to change their profile photos to blue squares on Instagram, writing, "Change your avi in support of what is fair, of what is the future. The tides have changed, Barbz. Love u #TIDALforALL."
The streaming site made waves earlier last week (March 23) when it was announced that Taylor Swift would be hosting her discography on Tidal — a controversial decision since she pulled all of her music, including her new album 1989, from Spotify.
TIDAL will cost twice the price of Spotify premium, clocking in at $19.99 a month.
