Rapper and songwriter Big Boi will join Maroon 5 on stage during the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show.

The musician, born Antwan Andre Patton, may sound familiar to some fans. He was once one half the iconic music duo Outkast, alongside Andre 3000. Together, the pair put out hits like "The Way You Move," "Ms. Jackson" and "Roses." They were wildly popular, but stopped making music together in 2007. Outkast briefly reunited in 2014 to perform at Coachella, but have not worked together since. After the group dissolved, Andre 3000 said Big Boi "can rap better than me." Big Boi maintained that wasn't true, telling The Atlanta Journal-Constitution they are "equally matched."

"Nobody can stop us, together or separate, and that's not being cocky, that's being real. I tip my had to what he said, but we're equal," he said. "He will kill you and I will destroy you."

Although no longer in a group together, Big Boi and Andre 3000 appear to be close still. When Big Boi's son, Andre "Bamboo Patton II graduated high school in May 2018, Andre 3000 was present to celebrate. The trio appeared in several photos together.

Big Boi has returned to the music scene in a big way as a solo artist, however. Now he's set to appear at the Super Bowl in Atlanta, where he's from. Per a report from Variety, there was talk of bringing Outkast back together for the big game, but it didn't happen. Andre 3000 is said to have declined the offer.

During his solo career, Big Boi has released a number of albums and been featured on other artist's songs. He's worked with Missy Elliot and Janelle Monae, most notably. The rapper recently teamed up with Killer Mike on a new track – one of two he released ahead of the show, both of which can be heard here. He has also worked with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine in the past. The pair teamed up for the song "Mic Jack," which was featured on Big Boi's 2017 album BOOMIVERSE. The song is expected to be performed, at least partially, during the Super Bowl halftime show.

Like Maroon 5, Big Boi has faced criticism for deciding to perform at the Super Bowl. Other artists, like Cardi B and Rihanna, declined to be part of the show as long as San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernick is not welcome in the league amid continued protest. Big Boi hasn't responded to the backlash and likely will not.
