2 People Tragically Killed in Horrible Texas Train Wreck
A devastating train wreck in Pecos, Texas, near the Midland-Odessa area, left two people dead and three others injured on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred when a train carrying potentially hazardous materials collided with a tractor-trailer. The collision caused the train to derail and crash into the Pecos Chamber of Commerce building, creating a chaotic and tragic scene.
The victims included two individuals who were described as “veteran employees” of Union Pacific. Three more people were injured, including two who were inside the Chamber of Commerce building at the time of the crash. The severity of the accident shocked the community and prompted an immediate response from local and state authorities.
Two of the derailed train cars were carrying lithium-ion batteries and airbags, raising concerns about potential hazards. However, authorities confirmed that the materials were contained, and there was “no immediate hazard to public safety.” Emergency responders and hazardous materials experts worked quickly to ensure the area was secure.
Reeves County Emergency Services Chief Ronald Lee announced that the crash site and surrounding area would be closed for at least 24 to 48 hours. This restriction includes employees of nearby businesses, and detours have been put in place to help redirect traffic. The closure is necessary to allow emergency crews to work safely and effectively.
City officials, law enforcement, and state agencies coordinated seamlessly during the crisis. Lino praised their quick response and “fantastic” teamwork, which helped manage the difficult situation. He also urged the public to be patient during the clean-up process and avoid the area so crews can do their job without interference.
In light of this tragedy, officials reminded the public that if a vehicle becomes stuck on train tracks with an oncoming train, the best course of action is to call 911 immediately.
