Astros Re-sign First Baseman Yuli Gurriel for 2021
The Postseason is underway for the Houston Astros and even before the team could take the field today in Minnesota, they already have a reason to look forward to 2021.
First baseman Yuli Gurriel has agreed to a 1 year deal with the team for next season and he will come at a discount. Gurriel as accepted a guarantee for $7 Million, or a 20% discount when compared to his last deal. The team opted to make the announcement after the regular season but before the beginning of the playoffs which is definitely an odd time of year to see this deal finalized but 2020 has just been that kind of year hasn't it?
Before the season started and before the COVID-19 outbreak in America, Gurriel was making $8.3 Million for the year, but after the reduced schedule he will end up making $3,074,074 prorated. Click2Houston.com reports that Gurriel's new deal puts him at $6.5 million in salary with an $8 million club option for 2021. If things don't go so well the team can buy him out for half a million. Gurriel's bonus earnings are mostly based on plate appearances which could earn him another $2 million over next year.
Should the first baseman make it to the All-Star game he gets an extra $50K. Likewise, if he earns a gold glove or silver slugger award for his performance at the plate.
