‘Despicable Me 3’ Trailer: How the Minions Got Their Gru Back
Finally, the Despicable Me trilogy will be concluded. Until Despicable Me 4. Which I’m sure we’ll see soon enough; the first two Despicables plus the spinoff Minions earned more than $2.6 billion worldwide. People just love despicable cartoons, and also sentient Twinkies that talk in gibberish. Not that I blame them. I get it.
In the trailer for Despicable Me 3, Steve Carell is back in action as Gru, the world’s weirdest voiced super-villain. In this installment, Gru faces off with Balthazar Bratt, voiced by South Park’s Trey Parker, who has shoulder pads, ugly hair, and dances a lot. This pair appear to be on a collision course with wackiness. Here’s the official synopsis:
The team who brought you Despicable Me and the biggest animated hits of 2013 and 2015, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, returns to continue the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions.
The movie also features the voices of Kristen Wiig as Lucy, plus the Minions, as themselves. Parker is an interesting addition to this franchise, though it seems highly unlikely that he can add some of that South Park subversion to something like Despicable Me. But maybe his breakdancing and wacky hair will all be a superficial disguise for brilliant social commentary. (Or just more sentient Twinkie hijinks.) Despicable Me 3, or Despicable M3, opens in theaters on June 30, 2017. I like Despicable M3. It’s fun to try to say.
