Welcome to Texas, the skinny state. Okay, that’s probably not what Texas is known for, but it could be in the future now that Big Pharma just invested $6.5 billion in a manufacturing plant in Houston.
GLP-1s like Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro are everywhere. If you haven't used them before, you likely know someone who has. The problem is they’re expensive and hard to find, not to mention you have to poke yourself with a needle every week.

The new pill on the block: Orforglipron.

Now imagine swapping all that for a pill. No injections, no food or water restrictions, just something you swallow once a day. That’s exactly what Eli Lilly is proposing with its new experimental obesity pill, orforglipron. And to make it happen, they’re pouring $6.5 billion into a brand-new manufacturing plant right in Houston.
The move is huge for Texans. Not only could it make the most talked-about weight-loss treatment easier to get, but it also means 615 new permanent jobs in Houston and thousands more construction jobs to help build the new site.

Plans for the new Houston facility.

Eli Lilly says the Houston facility will focus on producing orforglipron and other small-molecule drugs for diseases like diabetes, heart issues, and even cancer. The company expects the plan, one of four they’re building nationwide, to start making medicine within five years.
For Texans who’ve been stuck on waiting lists or watching prices skyrocket, the idea of a pill could feel like the first real shot (without the shot) at long-term access.
