THROWBACK THURSDAY: Victoria Misses Dick’s Food Store
It hasn't even been a year since Dick's Food Store closed, and it is missed dearly! It's a sad sight to drive by on Crestwood and see the empty building. Not only that, but the Dairy Treet has been closed for renovations.
That corner, which has so much history in Victoria, is dead! However, there is a little good news, at least for Dairy Treet, is that the renovations are just about complete and will be opening up soon.
Dick's Food Store closed its doors in May of 2025.
The last operating day for Dick's was on May 31, 2025. Dick's Food Store was a family affair that was run by the Dick and Hyak families. George Hyak is the owner and co-founder of Dick‘s Food Store in Victoria, which was founded in 1938. George Hyak's brother-in-law, Albert Dick, became a partner in 1946.
For many in the Victoria area, the Dick's Food Store name remains a true symbol of Victoria. I can't tell you how many Cokes I bought in those Coke machines.

My family has a rich history with Dick's Food Store.
I started to work at Dick's West End on Moody Street when I was 18. I bagged groceries, swept the parking lot, and was then promoted to produce. My dad and grandpa also worked for Dick's Food Store in produce at the Crestwood locations.
Chances are if you grew up in Victoria, you worked or know someone who worked at Dick's Food Store. At its peak, Dick's had three locations in Victoria - Moody Street, Lone Tree Road, and Crestwood. We miss the convenience of the friendly hospitality of Dick's Food Store.
