J.K. Rowling Confirms ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Will Be a Trilogy
It’s been several years since Muggles had any major new Harry Potter content to enjoy, but after a brief dry period, J.K. Rowling’s world of magic is on the verge of a major comeback. (And just in time; I was beginning to regret this lightning bolt tattoo I got on my forehead.) Potter himself returns in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a two-part West End stage play based on a story by Rowling, and the HPCU (that’s “Harry Potter Cinematic Universe,” y’all, c’mon) returns to big screens this fall with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a prequel to the main Potter franchises based on another book by Rowling.
The Fantastic Beasts book was supposedly one of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbooks, written by a wizard named Newt Scamander, who will be the hero of this new spinoff, and played by Eddie Redmayne. Several years ago, Warner Bros. head Kevin Tsujihara told The New York Times that he hoped to turn Fantastic Beasts into a franchise, and it looks like that plan is full-steam ahead about half a year out of the first film’s release. Here’s what Rowling said on Twitter in response to another tweet about the Cursed Child play and the rumor that it’s going to be turned into a movie. It’s not, but...
Sure, Cursed Child isn’t a movie now, but does anyone really believe that it won’t happen at some point down the line? If you’ll buy that one, I’ve got some swamp land in Diagon Alley I’d like to sell you. Fantastic Beasts opens in theaters on November 18, 2016.
