Is A New ‘Star Trek’ TV Series in the Works?
It’s hard to think that an entire generation of young folk are more intimately familiar with the ‘Star Trek‘ of J.J. Abrams‘ reboot franchise, given the decades worth of 5+ TV series, and 10 resulting films, but the idea of bring ‘Star Trek’ back to TV is hardly a new one. So what are the odds of seeing that materialize in the near future?
Not great! ‘Pushing Daisies’ and ‘Heroes‘ writer Bryan Fuller recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his forthcoming ‘Hannibal‘ TV series, but along the way fielded a question or two about his publicized ideas shared with fellow Trek enthusiast Bryan Singer. The basic answer is that while possible, and hope of bringing back ‘Star Trek’ to TV lies with Abrams himself , as Fuller says:
“Bryan [Singer] and I are big fans of Trek and have discussed a take on what we would do, and we would love to do it. I don’t think anything is going to happen in any official capacity until after the next movie comes out. And I’m sure it would be wisely under J.J. Abrams’ purview of what happens. He’s the guardian of Trek right now.”
Seeing as how TV’s last ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ wrapped up a full seven years ago, and with Abrams’ 2013 sequel likely not the last of the franchise, we wouldn’t start charging our tricorders just yet. Fuller also has plenty on his plate between ‘Hannibal’ and the upcoming Munsters re-boot ‘Mockingbird Lane,’ so even if Abrams decided to take Trek back to TV, a number of stars would have to align to see it done this way.
What say you? Does ‘Star Trek’ deserve another go on the small screen, or is J.J. Abrams’ movie franchise more than enough to fill the gap? Beam up your comments in the pads below!
