SNAP Deadline Extended to Replace Food Lost in Texas Floods
If you or someone you know lost groceries during the recent flooding, this is important: the deadline to apply for SNAP replacement benefits has been extended to August 18.
Governor Greg Abbott announced the update after Texas received federal approval to give families more time to request emergency food benefits.
If you’re a SNAP recipient and your food was destroyed or spoiled due to power outages or flooding, you can request replacement benefits right now. Once approved, the funds will be added to your Lone Star Card within two business days.
How to Apply:
You’ve got a couple of options:
- Call 2-1-1 → Select your language → Press Option 7
- Fill out Form H1855 (the affidavit for destroyed food):
- Download from HHSC
- Mail to:
- Texas Health and Human Services Commission, P.O. Box 149027, Austin, TX 78714-9027
- Or fax to: 877-447-2839
What About Hot Food?
SNAP usually doesn’t cover hot meals, but from now until August 14, it does in 33 counties. That means you can buy:
- Rotisserie chickens
- Hot deli meals
- Other ready-to-eat foods at the grocery store
You don’t need to do anything to activate this; just swipe your card. For additional help, like food pantries or shelters, dial 2-1-1 and press Option 1, or visit the HHSC disaster help page.
In the last few weeks, Abbott has expanded disaster declarations, unlocked millions in recovery loans and hospital aid, and added mental health support. But for families who lost everything, food comes first, and this program might be the lifeline they need.
