Texas Unveils New Driver’s License With Black Star
Texans with a new driver’s license will notice some changes beyond their photo and expiration date. On Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) rolled out a redesigned driver’s license and state ID that’s clearer to read and tougher to fake.
What changed on the card?
The personal information section has been reorganized into a cleaner, easier-to-verify layout. In the top right corner, the former gold star has been replaced with a black, laser-engraved star. That mark shows the card is REAL ID-compliant, now required for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal facilities as of May 7, 2025.

The new cards are made of tamper-resistant polycarbonate that meets American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) standards, a shift DPS says will make counterfeiting significantly harder and better protect Texans from identity theft.
Do I need to replace my current license?
No rush. Licenses and IDs issued before Aug. 18 remain valid until their printed expiration date. When you renew or replace, you’ll receive the new design.

Renewal window and your options.
Most Texans can renew a driver’s license, motorcycle license, or ID up to two years before or two years after it expires, either online, by phone, by mail, or in person. If it’s been more than two years since expiration, you’ll need to apply as a new applicant.
If you’re traveling, check that your ID is REAL ID-compliant or bring a passport or other TSA-accepted ID. Otherwise, keep using your current Texas license until it’s time to renew; the next one you receive will feature the new look and added security.
