"Whip My Hair" may have been a huge success for Willow Smith — the pop banger sold more than 1.2 million digital downloads alone upon its 2010 release — but the triumph came at a cost, Smith has admitted in a new interview with Red Table Talk.

The song, which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, was an earworm for anyone who heard its earth-shaking chorus. But Smith, who was just nine-years-old when it made its radio debut, was thrust into a state of unsureness, and said she began to harm herself as a result.

"It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing and I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of just in this gray area of, ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?'" she said.

Smith's mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, was incredulous over the revelation, and when she asked her daughter about the trying time, Smith said she used to cut herself “on my wrist."

"I mean, you can’t even see it but there’s still a little something there. But, like, totally lost my sanity for a moment there," she said. "I never talk about it because it was such a short, weird point in my life. But you have to pull yourself out of it."

And Smith has certainly done just that. In October 2017, she released her sophomore album The 1st, which debuted to critical acclaim. She proceeded to tour with St. Beauty, Kodie Shane, and Kitty Cash.
