Clinical Trials Going On…

What is a clinical Trial? A clinical trial is the study of a new medication or device which has not been approved by the FDA yet. A clinical trial is the process of collecting data to prove that a new medication is safe and effective. All drugs on the market today have been through clinical trials. What happens when someone does a clinical trial? Patients will review an informed consent form which tells them everything about the study such as the risks, benefits, data from previous studies with that medication, where the study will be conducted, what procedures will be completed during their study visits, and the length of the study. Clinical Trials are monitored closely by the FDA and Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to ensure patients safety during the study. Patients are closely monitored during the study through one-on-one visits with the study physician, diagnostic testing, and labwork to ensure that patients are safe during their participation. Clinical trials are another option for treatment, there is no contract and patients may stop participating in the clinical trial at any time. How old do you have to be? Our current studies require patients to be at least 18 years of age. The age limit is different for each study. Do they go on in Victoria and where? We are currently conducting studies in Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Gout. We are working with Dr. Noe Olvera, Rheumatologist and Dr. Richard Leggett, Internal Medicine physicians here in Victoria . All study visits will occur in the physicians office. What types of studies are going on right now? Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and GoutAll studies are free of cost to the patients.
