Sometimes doing good looks like cupcakes and jambalaya.

Employees at DeTar Healthcare System recently raised $2,268 for the VISD Education Foundation through two staff-led fundraisers in 2025.

It started with a simple bake sale and a jambalaya.

Last year the team and volunteers sold baked goods and bowls of jambalaya. Now the money collected from those fundraisers is headed straight back into local classrooms.

The donation will help support students and teachers across Victoria Independent School District through grants, scholarships, and classroom projects. This year, it’s being used to help fund a healthcare career development program for VISD high school students, giving them hands-on experience and a real look at what working in medicine actually means.

This isn’t DeTar’s first time stepping up.

Last year, part of their donation helped purchase an EKG machine for the Certified Medical Assistant program. That vital machine gave students access to real equipment as they train for their future healthcare careers.

“This donation reflects the generosity of our team and our shared commitment to supporting students in our community,” said Brett Maxfield, CEO of DeTar Healthcare System. “The success of our community is reflected in the success of these students — they are our future.”

Aaron Glaeske, Executive Director of the VISD Education Foundation, says the impact goes beyond the dollar amount.

“We’re grateful to DeTar and everyone who participated,” Glaeske said. “This directly supports students who are interested in healthcare careers and helps educators in meaningful ways.”

, and real opportunities for local students who may one day be caring for our community right back.
